The Social Welfare Department today launched the second round of a special grant to assist child care centres to tide over financial difficulties arising from the prolonged service suspension due to the COVID-19 epidemic.

The Legislative Council Finance Committee approved the second round of the Child Care Centre Special Grant on September 28. Shortly afterwards, the department issued letters to 555 aided and non-aided child care centres inviting applications.

A four-month special grant would be given to aided and non-aided child care centres, including those attached to kindergartens for children up to three years old.

Child care centres which have received the grant in the first round will get half the amount they previously received in this round.

For those which have not applied for the special grant before or have only commenced operation after January 15, the amount of grant per centre will be based on the number of children enrolled as at October 5.

The grant amount per centre is set at a full-day rate at $2,000 and a half-day rate at $1,000 for each enrolled child per month or the approved monthly fee, whichever is less.

The application deadline is October 9.

The first payment covering September and October will be made in October, while payments for the remaining two months will be made in the respective months.
